Hey Fedi! I'm looking for some advice on buying an #espresso machine. I'm willing to pay for good quality but I don't want anything with some touchscreen or programmable control that might die on me one day. Serviceability is also a premium to me. Do any of you #coffee obsessives have a recommendation to pass along?
@benedictllo Definitely got a Breville on the short list, and it might win in its ability to offer serious value-for-money. I just got a little shy from that option because I saw "programmable", and especially after my electric kettle died due to the electronics failing despite the heat element being just fine, I'm trying to avoid those sorts of devices again. I should be able to fix it or find someone to fix it easily.
@roadriverrail I’ve used one of the Breville models (can’t remember which) while working at a cafe in LA and that worked pretty well! Also, Rancilio makes some solid machines for home espresso. Check those brands out too!
@roadriverrail I can only share my own limited experiences. I’m on my second Sunbeam EM7xxx series machine. Inside these, all the electrical connections are spade connectors and water connections are push on for low pressure connections and threaded compression fittings for high pressure. So all easy to disconnect and reconnect. I’d still have the first if I was smarter and not just randomly replacing components to try and repair.. 😳
@benedictllo Well, some electronics are tolerable, provided they don't make normal use impossible. In the case of my kettle, the element is just fine, but the only way to activate it is through the hard-to-reach electronics inside the handle. Something with, say, an electronic gauge doesn't impede my use just because the gauge burns out.
@roadriverrail ahhhh, I see. That makes sense. Make someone else mentioned that Flair makes some great lever machines… it’s good to check if they don’t also have some electronic elements to them though. Lots of these gadgets sneak them in where you least expect them!
