    I am gonna take the, “did we even watch the same show as the ultra conservative and fascist people saying ‘Trek/Wars/Who has gone ‘woke’” even further, and go with there are pretty much three kinds of successful sci-fi serials:

    ~dystopian or subversive ones making pretty obvious commentary about fascism

    -ones with some slight hope for the human future that have always made at least a little social commentary about how we could make things more egalitarian and open for POC, women, gay people, etc

    ~shitty space marines with generally poor writing that made ad revenue

    And the first two flew over way too many chuckleheads’ noggins.

      Y’all you are not supposed to want to live in the Empire, or on Ferenginar, or be a peon slaving for the Emperor. You are not supposed to want to be killed by the bugs to get to vote. That’s the point. The whole point.

      @hacks4pancakes I have a neighbor who has those little family decals on their car and they’re all shaped as like one big storm trooper one storm trooper with a bow on it which I guess is supposed to be a woman, storm trooper and two little storm troopers

      Did we watch the same movie?

      @dko

      i still wonder if heinlein wrote starship troopers as a sociopolitical satire or sarcasm.

      not sure where he was at the time, whether he was still a social idealist, or had already gone over to the other side, or back to moderate-conservative.

      I will point out that Heinlein *did* intend Starship Troopers to be pro-military and *did* write essays in favour of stuff like the fight-bugs-to-vote thing.

      Heinlein was a bad influence on young me. Fortunately, I got better.

      @hacks4pancakes someone asked Verhoven how he knew where American was heading when he wrote Starship Troopers. He said something like "I didn't write about where America was going to be. I wrote about where it was already."

      @hacks4pancakes the ones that really bake my noodle are the writers who apparently don't even understand the obvious implications of their own work. like the guy who wrote Altered Carbon - a story whose core mechanic is almost entirely defined by the trauma of being in a body that isn't your own - turning out to be a transphobe. just... wat?

      @hacks4pancakes 'trek has gone so woke, that the next thing they'll likely do, is make a series where the commanding officer is black, 2 of his senior staff are women (one of them trans), and at least one major agender/non-binary character :ablobcatwink:

      @hacks4pancakes To this day, I chuckle at the fact that the OG Star Trek ever aired more than a few episodes, given it is basically a communist utopia released in an era of red scare 🤔

      @hacks4pancakes I wonder if it might even be simpler than that: is the divide between people who think sci-fi is about the future, and those who recognize that good sci-fi uses the future as a canvas to paint pictures of the past and present in ways we can access?

      I'm reminded of when a reader asked Lois McMaster Bujold about how a character responsible for the murder of protestors in her books could also consider himself pro-democracy. She replied that she was a Kent State alum.
