@anonicus He's right, I forgot that everybody said Twitter was gonna collapse from laying off so many workers and it didn't. -

@anonicus I don't think the workers were necessarily bad. When there was a bunch of money flying around, the theory was: hire a ton of good people even if you don't have a use for them, or they'll go work somewhere else. -

@anonicus it's a good thing if fake jobs are going away. Less stress dropped onto the real workers -

@Moon From the Tiktoks I have seen of these workers back in 2022 having their usual day there, It felt more like a daycare for adults than a place to work. Sexy Moon likes this. -

@anonicus I got a ton of shit talking about this. I've worked in plenty of big companies. In big companies it's hard for the organization to know what's going on and properly evaluate every worker. So a large percentage of workers really are bad at their job or are doing essentially no productive work and the organization can't detect it. -

>is twitch doomed to run into the ground
twitch actually has a sound bbusiness model even if they need to dowwnsize and make stupid decisions
discord offers a free service and has reached the dead end of howw attractive they can make their monetization options without massively downgrading the free experience
the moves discord made indicate the investors are looking to collect
both are stripping the wwires from the wwalls to report better numbers but they can't change the money coming in -

@shibao @anonicus my opinion is that google laying off people is what opened the floodgates not twitter. twitter was seen as an anomaly because of musk being erratic. -

@Moon @anonicus when I worked in security at the power company I had to evaluate the needs of a new application and the developer I was meeting with was like a 10 year employee who did networked applications and they couldn't tell me anything useful. They didn't know what ports needed to be open. They didn't know what a port was. TCP? UDP? Completely clueless.
There are plenty of people out there making six figures and know nothing about their jobs at all. I'm not even certain person had ever done anything besides copy and paste installation instructions from OracleSexy Moon likes this. -

@Moon @anonicus The "problem" with devs is there isn't an easily quantifiable metric a dumb manager can look at to see how they're doing. It's not like a factory line where you can count up widgets produced and see a 5% increase/decrease on the afternoon shift. Managers have to actually understand each dev and what they do individually, or else they're just relying on indirect numbers and "trust me bro".
Management science has not evolved as fast as IT over the last 30 years. They don't have a good scaling model for knowing each person 1-on-1, especially once outsourcing and remote work became the norm.Sexy Moon likes this. -

@shibao @Moon @anonicus Yeah, my guess back then was Twitter not really needing that many workers but also doubting they would only fire the nonessential workers. I guess it worked out for, especially considering the cost savings.
