    Dear Car people,

    I need help. I've already gone web sleuthing, posted on Reddit, reached out to the one person I know about cars.

    I have a 2013 Mazdaspeed3. The battery died, so I took it out and charged it in the garage on the charger. Re-installed the battery the next day. Now my Climate Control system doesn't work. The illumination stuff around the buttons don't turn on, no buttons work, and nothing appears on the info screen. Fuses were fine. I don't wanna deal with dealership. Helllllp!

      @IceCubeSoup @halfpint I think its OBD - not ODB - II, as in On Board Diagnostics, iirc. but yeah it sounds like you have a stupid computer chip in your car that has gone retarded. In most cases I've seen a FULL disconnect of power resets it and gets things back to normal and not the other way around, but it wouldn't surprise me

      @halfpint No, don't ever remove the battery before attaching something else that will supply at least a trickle of power.

      I made the same mistake, and I had to buy an ODB-II scanner gizmo to reset the computer and electronics.

      I had to do quite a bit of searching before I found out what I needed to do.

      Maybe knowing about "ODB-II" will speed things up for you; I have no idea if your trouble is the same as mine was.

      @halfpint actually it’s even more likely to just be a bad battery. Unless the car sat idle for 3 months or your alternator is fucked the battery should never go dead unless it’s bad or you have a short.

      @IceCubeSoup @halfpint most serious work requires complete battery disconnection, and there’s absolutely nothing in your car that will be damaged by being unplugged.

      @Sophistifunk @halfpint
      never in my life have I disconnected a battery to do work on a car, unless it was to replace the battery. this includes "serious" work like replacing the rod bearings.

      no "damage" comes from being unplugged, but recent experience with a recently built model taught me that it's annoying.

      maybe it's common practice in your part of the world. but I've never seen it or heard of it
