I made a mistake of replying to a post of one of the lawyers South Africa employed to make their case at The Hague. It seemed more like a news story than a personal support post.

I wouldn't comment on such a politically fraught subject since climate action is divisive enough, but I believe they're intertwined.

It seems so obvious to me that South Africa is doing this in order to help ratchet up anger at the USA and particularly Democrats who threaten the fossil fuel industry.

@GreenFire In 2020 the cost per kWh for solar dropped to $0.057 versus coal at $0.055, with wind well below that. The economic parity of renewable energy means that coal will become irrelevant. People trying to foster grievances of the coal miners are doing them a huge disservice.

For example, do you recall Trump's 2016 campaign slogan promising to end Democrats' "War On Coal"?

Coal generated more than 50% of US electricity 20 years ago but just 15% in 2024. That didn't happen because of GOP policies I hope you can appreciate.

US coal production peaked at 1.17 billion tons in 2008 right before Obama took office and will collapse to 490 million tons in 2024. Down 58% from peak.

So I wrote that thread on why it's important to support one side over the other side like we are in a war was prior to the U.S. responding to the attacks on innocent civilians by Iran's proxies.

There are two sides to choose from: democracy or authoritarianism. Democrats are trying to protect democracy so it you are attacking us, especially at the height of election season, than you are helping the enemies of democracy who are also our opposition towards getting climate action.

      Choose wisely.

Anyways, hopefully I get to the point I want to make on this post in this thread.

It's a mistake to attack, meaning decrease the political capital, of the country leading the battle against authoritarianism in fraught times like this. That's just the way it is. If more Americans were Democrats than we'd have some margin to work with, but we're only about 30% of the electorate so it's actually hard to win elections.

Next year for sure resume the attacks and remember vote in primaries for change

What makes me so mad about the left getting fooled into making all of these attacks against Democrats right now is that WE ARE AT WAR even if not publicly acknowledged. There is massive Grey Zone warfare being conducted in order to weaken democracies right now.

In no small part, the fossil fuel industry is aiding and abetting that war since it is the only way that they can block climate action. I've worked too long to get the progress we've managed to get to watch it just be thrown away so easy
