   any religions that have used stage magic to enhance the experience of their followers? smoke, lighting, fire etc. are these the tools of magicians, or are they originally the tools of priests that have been re-appropriated by these wand waving fakers?

     I have a memory of my Catholic confirmation, of me expecting to see the holy spirit and all kinds of spooky mystical shit, and it never happened and so my childlike faith was broken. but what would have happened in my mind if the ceremony actually used Wizard of Oz style stage magic to fake the appearance of a divine presence? Would I have become a diehard believer? Should it not have been the church's obligation to use these tricks in order to keep me? Is it their fault for not doing this?

     @lain perhaps, but in the arms race of magical spectacle it was clearly lagging behind other sources. some smoky perfume cannot compete with the pokemon intro when trying to capture the mind of a child. it was over before it ever began religionbros
