    I somehow never realized until now that the reason a 521 bit prime is used instead of a 512 bit prime for NIST elliptic curves is that 2521\ -1 is a Mersenne prime.

      @ryanc The NIST specs indicate at many places that 521 is not a typo because it looks so weird when we're used to powers of two
