    Wondering why Americans call New Year, New Years. Why the plural when it's just one year that's new? Just musing.

      @CloudyMrs @JackTheCat I've always assumed it the possessive, New Year's, rather than a plural - a contraction of New Year's [Day][Eve], or whatever.

      Though your explanation may be more likely!

      @MartyCormack but without Eve, Day or Appostrophe, it makes no sense. For example "we went to bla for New Years". Seems to be quite common. No biggie though. Hope you have a good one. 👍

      @CloudyMrs
      Because of the frequent (and correct) use of "New Year's Eve" or "New Year's Day." It is possessive and not plural. But leaving off the apostrophe and Eve/Day suffix is incorrect.

      @patrickhadfield @CloudyMrs Not implying that the large majority of Muricans are educationally limited banjo playing turnips. It takes talent to play the banjo. Unless you've got tiny Trump hands.

      @JackTheCat @Roadwarrior29 except it is a totally different vegetable depending on where you are. I once accidentally ordered an English Turnip instead of the neep I needed for beside my tatties.

      @CloudyMrs As a Scot living in the US for over 25 years ... Americans do often say "New Year's" but it's shorthand for "New Year's Eve (or Day)." It's a possessive, not a plural.

      Some people will write "New Years," but that's a failure to include the possessive apostrophe, which I believe happens sometimes in Blighty as well.

      The thing that puzzles me is the difference in spoken emphasis. Americans say "Happy NEW Year" while in Scotland I think we always said "Happy New YEAR."

      @bodhipaksa when I grew up in Caithness it was always Good New Year, with the emphasis on Good. Older folk still say it.

      @CloudyMrs I don't think I ever heard anyone say "Good New Year" anywhere I lived in Scotland (mainly Fife and Glasgow), unless they were using the expression "A guid New Year tae ane and aw."
