@corbin The one thing I would add is that you don't know what a hotel's provider does to your traffic. I've been to hotels where Mastodon.social was blocked (but Facebook and Twitter were not), and to one where technical information sites were blocked ("hacking sites") ... the one I specifically remember was seclists.org (which tells you how long ago this was), but there were some online training sites included as well.
I've been meaning to write this for a long time: if you don't know if you need a VPN, you don't need a VPN. It’s not a magical fix for your online security and privacy.
