Wondering whether anyone has solid confirmation for this from @lana about mass layoffs at Duolingo, replacing translators with AI:

So far the sources seems to be a dubious news site and a plausible Reddit post. But it’s just the sort of thing I could believe a slap-happy executive would do….

  Wow, Duolingo fired their translators to replace them by AI generated content. I thought they cared about language and communication! A lot of their courses are irreplaceable, the languages are not available in any other app and some real native people have made content for some of the endangered languages.

  @clmerle That’s what the Reddit post in question is: employee saying they were laid off. Likely true; likely not capturing full context.

  @inthehands so far all I know Duolingo has introduced a new more expensive tier that uses AI to help users learn.
  However, if there are layoffs, I think we’d hear about it from those laid off.
