When you choose that, you’ve already shared all the information of the activity with them. It’s easy to not share that data with those groups if you want privacy. I don’t see where the issue is. You could choose not to record GPS data? That’d be the most private.

Downloading activity data has nothing to do with your profile's privacy. But if you join a group or participate in any activity like any sort of neighborhood competition, that activity's privacy is changed and it overrides your profile's privacy. Even less of a Strava fan now
