   "Your right wing uncle"

   At some point, we white people are going to have to deal with the reality that it's not one distasteful outlier. Something like a third of your relatives want to dominate, harass, and hurt people; including you if you try to stop them. And another third is happy to go along with it, if it saves them from having an awkward conversation.

     @jenniferplusplus yep, exactly. They are not ignorant or deluded rubes. They are truly cruel and selfish people that want a cruel and selfish leader, too, so they can then impose their sick worldview onto others as "natural order". Basket of deplorables was the right term, but it is a very large basket indeed. This matches my real lifetime experience here.

     And they'll pay any price to make it happen, by the way. Including being subject to the same domination, harassment, and harm. They'll do this because they genuinely sincerely believe the world operates on a hierarchy of power. You can't logic them out of it. There's no Aaron Sorkin speech that will make them value other people. It's just not how they think the world works. The only thing you can do is work on the other third, and teach the next generation better

     @jenniferplusplus @bassplayer getting ahead by pushing others behind is what they see as the natural order. They experience pleasure in bullying, even in watching those they consider as less than them suffer and die.

     @bassplayer Authoritarians view all interactions and relationships as a matter of power and dominance. What they want in life is to *have a place* in that hierarchy of dominance. They accept being kicked, because they want to live in a world where people can kick the people below them, because they want people below them that they can kick.

     I say want, but it's not really a matter of desire. It's how they understand the world.
