@deavmi the public system can only work if the government can successfully regulate the prices of medicines, equipment, etc. If you don't regulate that with an iron fist they'll bleed you dry. So you have to be all-in on refusing to allow any of the healthcare industry to operate as a free market.
If you fail to do so they'll seize the opportunity to latch onto the government's teat and they'll suck you dry. It's even worse if you allow insurance companies to be middle-men.
You basically need to drive out all healthcare innovation from your country unless the government is paying for it. This is something people refuse to accept. The incentives are all fucked up if you don't.

@feld come to SA, look at how screwed public health is here.
Disclaimer: I am pretty small state minded but the statement above is true, we have a public healthcare system that is broken, you'll wait in lines forever. The state is now trying to move patients from public system into the private one but by forcing the private health to serve them - like with a tally sheet of hours.
That and heavily subsidizing this whole thing in a way that will bankrupt the nation.
Where will they find the money? The tax base - I shall have more wealth extracted from me because of the KFC and Glucose enjoyers of my nation
