Hey Substackers, guess you have seen the news about Substack refusing to remove Nazi content or stop paying Nazi content authors (https://oldfriends.live/@paul/111620175373418478), and maybe your thinking, Hey I left Twitter when the Nazi's arrived, guess I should leave Substack too! But where to go?

Good news, WordPress.com, known for hosted WordPress Blogs (that now attach to the fediverse!), now has full-featured hosted WordPress Newsletters.

    Check it out here: https://wordpress.com/newsletter/#:~:text=If%20you%20already%20have%20a,whenever%20you%20publish%20new%20posts

Substack co-founder Hamish McKenzie, "I just want to make it clear that we don’t like Nazis either—we wish no-one held those views. But some people do hold those and other extreme views. Given that, we don’t think that censorship (including through demonetizing publications) makes the problem go away—in fact, it makes it worse" Just deleted my Substack acct https://www.theverge.com/2023/12/21/24011232/substack-nazi-moderation-demonetization-hamish-mckenzie

Hat tip to Hilda Bastian @hildabast for this wonderful guide to help people migrate from Substack to Wordpress:

Absolutely Maybe: Substack Versus WordPress Newsletter: First Impressions and Migration Tips >>> https://absolutelymaybe.plos.org/2023/06/22/substack-versus-wordpress-newsletter-first-impressions-and-migration-tips/

"The bottom line, though, is that I just wasn’t comfortable on a platform that’s a major leagues money-maker for the misinformation-hate complex. And I didn’t want to wait for the likely-inevitable enshittification development or event that made moving urgent."

WordPress is open source, Substack is not. Assuming for the moment you're asking in good faith, the question is: are there nazis with monetized blogs/newsletters hosted by Automattic on wordpress.com?

@osma @mastodonmigration I suppose that *is* what I'm asking. Both I and my company left X/twitter because of the warm welcome given to nazis by the new management.
I like to write and share what I write. Where can one do that and not find that the platform is also used by such monsters?
Mastodon has been lovely, as far as I have seen anyway. I fear that if I move my efforts from substack to WordPress/Automattic, will I just be picking up and moving again once the nazis there get discovered? Is there anywhere for that kind of service free of those folks? It's depressing.

@mastodonmigration It is really easy -- moving my posts and subscriber list took 20 minutes. The one area that's less easy is dealing with paid subscribers. You can identify them easily enough, and you can comp them in on WP for as long as their subscription lasts, but they will all need to reauthorise payments through Stripe. That means you will get drop-off and lose income, which can make life hard for creators who rely on it for the bulk of their money.

I hope @juddlegum sees this post and acts on it. I subscribe to Popular Information, which I love, but I wish it were not on Substack.

@mastodonmigration Mullenweg is also just plain nice. He's serious about Open Source and serious about building sustainable community around Open Source. (I have complaints about WordPress and the commercial ecosystem around it, but they pale in contrast to many of the alternatives.)
