    @deavmi @Invictus @Pantangelini @wyliesau the TLDR is something like musical chairs: the standards are slowly adapted to phase out entire types of vehicles (hence no small trucks) -- and not entirely sensibly. Have a look: 2011 and 2023 Ford Ranger:

        Corporate average fuel economy
        Corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) standards are regulations in the United States, first enacted by the United States Congress in 1975, after the 1973–74 Arab Oil Embargo, to improve the average fuel economy of cars and light trucks (trucks, vans and sport utility vehicles) produced for sale in the United States. More recently, efficiency standards were developed and implemented for heavy-duty pickup trucks and commercial medium-duty and heavy-duty vehicles. CAFE neither directly offers incentives for customers to choose fuel efficient vehicles nor directly affects fuel prices. Rather, it attempts to accomplish the goals indirectly, by making it more expensive for automakers to build inefficient vehicles by introducing penalties.The original CAFE standards sought to drive automotive innovation to curtail fuel consumption, and now the aim is also to create domestic jobs and cut global warming. Stringent CAFE standards together with government incentives for fuel efficient vehicles in the United States should accelerate the demand for electric vehicles.CAFE standards are administered by the Secretary of Transportation...

      It's not like this was new territory. Every terrestrial petrol vehicle on earth is compatible to every petrol fueling system on earth, and has been for approaching 100 years.

      If the market had spoken, Tesla would still be using Lotus as a basis. It was government interference and grants that created this industry; the same government that meddles via CAFE standards.

      @jeremiah @wyliesau @Invictus @Pantangelini the government should not fund these charging stations, if you are saying they currently are.

      Let the market figure it our, they're bound to come to a interoperable solution. Infact I am sure a few companies did.

      There is some tech channel in watch on YouTube who spoke about it for some brands of cars. I can't recall the channels name.

      @wyliesau @Invictus @Pantangelini to be fair, the problems with EVs are the power systems. Everything else is fuckin' great: full torque at 0rpm, quieter, etc.

      The power problem is not slight:
      * dependence on nasty mining and foreign interests almost exclusively (we have our own oil)
      * expensive, slow, randomly compatible infrastructure the taxpayer is bilked for
      * limited range/performance
      * severe fire hazards

      Other than that, EVs are fantastic.

      @Invictus how? It's range is going to start by sucking. Then you put shit in it, and lose even more range. It has a bitty bed, and you lose whatever benefit the front would provide in crash protection -- less of it than even the current Mini. It's also $14,000 more than an F150.

      ... how does this make far more sense?

      This is called the Telo. This makes far more sense to me than an F150 Lightning.
