    @TheConversationUS one need not even look for deeper principles. At the time, the concept and purpose was very clear. Insurrection is not just about ideation. For example, for those who expressed "southern sympathies", this was not about them. Only those who took an "affirmative" action, like showing allegiance to & participating in the confederacy, qualified for exclusion. This was based on the action, not a conviction. Trump engaged in affirmative actions to further his coup attempt.
