My original post was mostly a snarky comment on the inappropriate use of a summary statistic that is misleading.

Child mortality was also very large so the median(WAG)* is probably higher, maybe 5 or so.

I only picked on the Middle Ages since that was the most recent comment that I had seen (There were no old people!!!!).

The Renaissance likely made things worse.

* WAG = Wild Ass Guess. It's a technical term.
