   It's been a busy and productive year for Phoenix R&D! We are proud to have achieved a number of significant milestones over the past eight months.

   So this might be a long thread 🙂👇

   1️⃣ Phoenix R&D is launched (April)
   Finally, we are proud to have officially launched Phoenix R&D in April of this year. After operating as "Project Phoenix" for a while, it was great to formalize our legal structure and establish a headquarters in Berlin.

     6️⃣ Founding a new IETF working group: More Instant Messaging Interop (MIMI) (November)
     At the IETF115 we took part in the creation of a new IETF working group that aims to facilitate interoperability between different instant messaging applications.

     Once fully established, the MIMI working group will build on the work of the MLS working group to enable applications to interoperate without sacrificing security.

     5️⃣ Sovereign Tech Fund chose OpenMLS for its pilot round (November)
     One of the highlights of the year was being chosen by the Sovereign Tech Fund for its pilot round. This was a great recognition of the value and potential of OpenMLS, and we are excited to see how it will continue to grow and evolve.

     3️⃣ Cooperation with @hpi_de@bird.im-in.space (July)
     We had the opportunity to enter a cooperation around the subject of authentication in messaging systems. This was a great opportunity to collaborate with a leading academic institution and we look forward to continuing our partnership.

     4️⃣ We started preparations for post-quantum secure messaging (August)
     We are also pleased to announce that we have started preparations for post-quantum secure messaging in collaboration with partners in academia.

     The question of how to protect against new attacks that become possible with quantum computers needs addressing, particularly in the messaging space. With our MLS stack, we think we are in a good position to address this.

     2️⃣ First mission: A research project about private and federated messaging (April)
     Thanks to funding from NLnet foundation we can focus on our core mission: build a messaging infrastructure that is as privacy-preserving as possible, yet also decentralized.

     7️⃣ The MLS standardization process at IETF enters the final phase (December)
     The journey has started in 2018, and after much work and input from many people, the two main documents are now being proposed for publication.

     This has been a long and complex process, but we are confident that the final protocol will be a valuable resource for secure messaging.
