     @rwg Hi Robert: I'm writing up a history of this from my own first hand experience. I do not perceive this as you did.

     The only voices making this case then were fedi admins from "free speech extremist" sites - and maybe 1 app developer. And no one said "let them join & give them a chance 1st." Those not willing to defed, would not do so regardless out of pure libertarian principles. I'm also documenting how quickly we got to 97 percent isolated. It was weeks. It was remarkably fast.

     @rwg Thanks - am writing it up over holiday break - looking for good data now on exact size of non-gab Fediverse in July 2019 by registered and active users…. If u know of a source lmk.

     @tchambers Looking forward to it. What I'm talking about is that no doubt intense period, in which people debated blocking instances outright -- much as they are doing now. The counterargument to blocking an instance is a free speech argument. What interviewees have told me is that they heard that argument when they advocated for blocking Gab (and other servers).

     We're repeating this now with Meta, aren't we?

     @rwg I’ll work to quantify that - it def existed. I was a leader in #isolategab efforts… but almost all were “federate gab regardless” as a pure libertarian stance & suspect those are now still “federate Threads regardless” (a camp as you read in my blog I’m not in )…but in both cases they were a fringe, if a loud one sometimes.

     @tchambers I should add that Gab was blocked quite extensively, and that is an achievement for certain.

     But many advocates for blocking it have told me about getting a lot of flack for their position.
