@DamienMarieAtHope there is a Greek (and Roman) literary technique where you retell a past event as being similar to a more present one your trying to justify, in effect saying "X" is happening now because something similar had once before and is "meant" to be. But usually the time periods are far removed so the prior "event" version is not in current human memory. Of course these stories were both written down much later.
@DamienMarieAtHope The best examples is Hasmonean period writing defining and in effect justifying a present cruel and violent theocratic rein by asserting there was a previous one, but they were already well versed in Hellenistic cultural and literary styles by then. Hence, an imaginary lost golden age theocracy at the end of the bronze age, the mythic king David and "first" temple, to justify violent rule by priests of a claimed "second" one.
@DamienMarieAtHope true mastery of this technique, by clearly Roman writers using Jewish source materials, is found in the gospels, which uses it to create the illusion of prophecy, blending past material and, by that time, future knowledge, to create a prophesied mythic Jesus out of fiction.
@DamienMarieAtHope of course, like any good franchise does today, the gospel writers even promised a "sequel", with even bigger action, too, though political chaos, and the slow decline of the western empire probably is what kept it from being written ;).
@DamienMarieAtHope well, the other problem is that the sequel made predictions and promises that also never came true, and would likely have become so much more visible if there had been a fully fleshed out "Jesus II" made ;)... Because prophetic writing can always appear 100% accurate when written from a future perspective, but often fails miserably to state what happens "next" ;).
