This seems to me be a way to get rid of content you don't want in your #gnuscoial TL:
If you're on a gnusocial instance you usually have no means to block a person or account from a different #fediverse instance (regardless of platform). Thus you'll have to deal with a lot of annoying, sometimes even obnoxious, content in your TL that is reposted (RTed in the Twitter parlance) by people you subscribe to.
The workaround seems to be to ask the annoying account to *block* you. Posts from that account then won't make it to your TL.
This seems to be an instance of the similiar phenomenon when you subscribe to an account that for one reason or another decides to block you: You may on gnusocial still be technically subscribed to this account – at least the account appears in your lists of subscriptions – but you won't get any posts from there.
