🤔 These "Fear of Threads" convos say a little bit about how much Fediverse folk trust Threads and Meta, and a whole lot about how much Fediverse folk trust the granular Moderation and Trust & Safety tools available to them.

Whether you preemptively defed, or federate happily, you are right. You've made the best decision for you, given the information available to you. 👍🏿

But, you might have made/will make a different decision if you had more Fediverse appropriate Trust and Safety capabilities.

@mekkaokereke Assuming good faith on both sides is wise advice. 👍

@mekkaokereke for now I welcome the inclusion of Threads in the #Fediverse. While I like the "community" feel of Mastodon, it lacks a large enough user community. If #threads proves to cause trouble, then #mastodon server instance mods can block it on mass...

@mithriltabby @mekkaokereke See my argument why I think only one thing can fight EEE and it isn’t helped by defederation or limiting… see what you make of this case: https://www.timothychambers.net/2023/06/23/project-and-the.html

Threads and the Fediverse - A Smarter Battle Plan to Protect the Open Social Web
With the #meta #Project92 or #Threads Fediverse offering, there has been a, well, robust discussion of how to avoid threats looming. Those advocating mass-preemptive defederation make three cases for it. ➡️ To avoid data mining … However, defederation does virtually zero to avoid any big tech entity scraping all the Fediverse public social graph today - Want proof? See here: is.gd/q8U2pv But what if they merge that Fediverse data with their own internal data from IG isn’t that worse than just scraped data?

@mekkaokereke I think the people who see this as another attempt at "embrace, extend, and extinguish" have a point. Personally I lean toward "limit Threads initially and defederate once they make a move toward embrace/extend/extinguish" but I understand the people who are being preemptive about it.

One important clarification on the term "preemptively defed," For some folk that have chosen to defederate, I don't really think that their decision can be called preemptive.

I'm pro-defederation.👍🏿 No one owes anyone their time or attention.

I even supported people's decision to defederate or silence Hachyderm, and for reasons I considered without merit! This is not a contradictory statement.

Defederating and silencing is a key part of consent at a community level.
