     @disarray or or or hosting forums and mumble servers for my MMO guilds. real easy to make friends when you can do stuff like that

     @noe I'd say the internet before 2012 was still somewhat decent. I was active on a lot of forums back then.

     I distinctly remember a lot of my childhood just building useless forums on the free multi-forum hosts over and over because it was just something to do.

     I suddenly realize some younger folks on fedi never experienced the internet in the times of IRC being the norm, scrappy websites, and really just the time before the hyper-commercial space it is now.
     
     who's to say all the advancement we've got now isn't to the goals we see today... Capitalists learned they can exploit your brain chemicals for their benefit and kept doing it bigger and better.
     
     Can't load 250GB of your exploitation model into memory yet? Poke the manufacturers until you can load 3TB at a time. That's definitely enough.
     
     Can't even trust the browser anymore. Can't even open my own fucking fedi instance in w3m or lynx because it requires javascript (as if the text is utterly required to move or some shit)
     
     Can't even trust your ISP, despite giving me stupid fast internet, it's still Google, which means they're absolutely farming something for their benefit. Maybe it's because it makes YouTube/ad serving free for them.
