    There has been some talk about #Meta joining the Fediverse. As I understand it, the main concerns of users are that, a. Meta will scrap the #fediverse posts for user data. b. Meta will somehow take over #mastodon and the Fediverse. c. Meta will capture the mainstream from joining the Fediverse. So I have a few counters to the concerns. please do comment. 1. Any one can see your public Mastodon posts so the idea that Meta can see them shouldn't be that much of a shocker. The only concern would be your private messages that are not encrypted on Mastodon. Use encrypted messaging services like Signal. 2. Really? You think Threads will take over rule Mastodon? Threads is its own platform, users on the fediverse can still join Mastodon #servers of their choice and leave. I expect we'l see plenty of anti #threads Mastodon servers pop up. If Threads were to somehow get an influence in Mastodon, just switch to #lemmy switch to #pixelfed switch to #firefish So many choices. 3. This is a big one. Meta might capture the mainstrean fediverse. Lets just be real the average regular internet user wasn't going to join Mastodon in the first place. Not that they wouldn't want to it just isn't on their list next to #facebook #instagram #tiktok #youtube #discord or even #twitter . Actually I take what Meta is doing as a compliment to the fediverse. Remember Twitter at one time under #elon #elonmusk banned the talk of Mastodon or something like that. Threads might not have our interests at heart but they are already mainstream so why should they not allow their users be federated with us?

  Yes, I believe Thread being federated will lower the barrier for everyone to enter and follow others on Fediverse. For example, more people could consider sharing fedi handle in addition to 🐦 in public.
  And I think it’ll bring many interesting contents from Thread to the Fediverse. A lot of big brands are currently on Thread too.
  I definitely hope this will boost the growth of Fediverse!🥳

  Agreed! It’d be nice for everyone to join the Fediverse (either on Mastodon, Thread, or other instances).
  Cannot wait for the day when people list Fediverse handles everywhere like they do for 🐦

  @me I think that the best case scenario is that users on the Fediverse will be able to talk to our normal contacts without having to be on Threads ourselves. The best thing that the fediverse could benefit from, while Twitter on the other hand won't even let you talk about Mastodon.
