     guard, daemon, inquisition and ganger interaction is far more "interesting" than space marine because they provide flavor for the setting. legion space marines are very one tone because they are brainwashed(literal) factory standards. the only reason there are bright spots in astartes lore is when a specific character is somehow different from the parent legion/chapter.
     
     deep lore is good because its fucking old. new writing like the siege of terra fucks it all up. what the fuck is erda, what the fuck is astarte.

     @Wolffkran @Paultron @nugger @burner @Rhodesian_YuKari The lore has its own bright spots, I'm just very weary of saying "I don't like warhammer" and having to endure hours of "don't worry man I'll change your mind here lemme tell you about the recent black library release it's sooooooo cool"

     also the way the emperor was written is a crime. So many elements of the 40k franchise really highlight the fact that it wasn't ever expected to be this successful, they thought it would naturally peter out and disappear by 1994. Rotten foundations, like many sci fi franchises that got far more popular than ever imagined (like gundam, star trek)

     i don't like WH40k at all despite seeing it bears many similarities to things i like
     idk too self aware or something
     many dudes around me seem to like it and i have gathered more info on it by osmosis and my interest remains the same
     maybe some days i will psyop these guys into liking LotGH or cold war naval tactics as they try to get me to like bolter man or star war beam sabre guy
     it's good to have new things you're not familiar with so you can hear someone fanboy about it and not have it be retreading stuff you know

As a kid I used to laugh at the hobby shop's end cap, strewn with aged, unpopular, expensive looking crap from the franchise with a chuckle. We all thought it paled in comparison to the coolness of every other franchise's mechanical design - everything is just rounded, bubbly, bulky, and silly looking compared to more realistic stuff like gundam/robotech/star wars

     Just bugs me now that everyone who liked pretty much everything not-warhammer now pretends they loved it all along, and it's the coolest thing on earth, despite the fact its greatest strength is 40 years of dense lore to chew on.

     But mostly it's just because I think the brit company is pozzed, and people who think it's based are setting themselves up for embarrassment when they do their own "last Jedi".

     (and I just think the space marine designs are way less cool than people think they are)

It should have been left vague with conflicting "accounts" of what happened. Few actual "quotes" or direct accounts, just legends and remnants of catastrophic battles.
     
     The only thing they have done right is never explaining what happened to the two lost legions.

     What makes grimdark/horror work is wondering if there was ever hope at all. Did the Emperor even exist? Was there actually a Grand Crusade, or was it made up, and there was nothing more than one long decline with no reprieve.

     In reality it is because the creators of WH are fedora atheists and wanted to dunk on fascists/monarchists/crusaders/etc but ended up making them look cool.
