Glad I live in Europe with its better privacy laws, that option was not active for me on Dropbox. But good gods the tech industry really suck 😩 https://glammr.us/@hedgielib/111571037417166425
@to I don't think there is something particularly nasty about "tech". Society has grown incapable of controlling and regulating the overspecialized domains on which it now exclusively relies.
I mean "tech" was explicit about the business plan: "move fast and break things".
Once they've broken them once they looked over their shoulders to see anybody has noticed and is about to push back. Alas society is busy with "other stuff" so tech will just keep breaking things until there is push back.
@to the issue is that the users don't revolt, they just take it.
A lot of it has to do with ignorance. There is nobody with authority that warns against the risks. In fact the opposite, public sector entities have been endorsing unsavory tech business models for a long time.
And for those few users who are aware, it is not easy to switch once there is monopolization, lock-in, network effects and lack of interoperability standards.
The tech industry takes advantage of apathy and collusion
