I don't understand why, but somehow usenet news readers keep coming to mind as I use it. (This is a complement.)

It does thread posts in the timeline. No more reading threads in reverse order. Also indicates when a boosted post is part of a thread.
I think the main thing about Phanpy is that it's designed in lots of ways to display enough information to scan quickly, but invites clicking to dig into things. I find myself clicking more than I scroll.
And it bundles notifications together with some nice interface. And there are many other interface touches. Also page down scrolls properly (except in multi-column mode which is a bit janky, but which it does have, and which makes the columns nice and wide).
And it threads comments on posts. Including deep threading and collapse/expand of sub-conversations. This makes me much more likely to dig into conversations.
@joeyh Thank you for the recommendation. I hadn't heard of Phanby before, but I've been trying it today, and it's overall a much nicer user experience than the native UI of Mastodon. I've not had any big problems so far, but it'll take a while to find how to do all the things I'm used to doing with Mastodon.
Overall, with half a day's experience, five out of five stars. It's easy enough to try, for anyone curious.
