In news related to me last boost, TIL the #Primus album Sailing the Seas of Cheese was released just 11 days after Madison Wisconsin's Great Butter Flood/Fire. Also TIL that Great Butter Flood is a phrase that has escaped the lips of people who were entirely sober and not giggling even a little.

"Once the walls caved in, [the butter] came out like a river."

I am not currently aware of any evidence that Les or anyone else affiliated with the band was aware of the event.

@klara @epilanthanomai Last year, Atlanta Roller Derby hosted some scrimmages against Madison Roller Derby. A bunch of us just *had* to buy their team t-shirts, which say "MOO bitch! Get out the WHEY!"

I must say the joke is even funnier to me now.

@epilanthanomai How did this happen in my lifetime and I-- born in Wisconsin, living in Madison from 2000 to 2004 and again from 2011 to 2013, with friends who grew up in Madison-- never even heard of it?

Like... are people who know too sensitive about its potential for easy Wisconsin jokes, so they'd rather just not mention it?

@epilanthanomai I'll have to put that one in my personal "weird disaster" list right next to the Great Molasses Flood.

        Great Molasses Flood
The Great Molasses Flood, also known as the Boston Molasses Disaster, was a disaster that occurred on January 15, 1919, in the North End neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. A large storage tank filled with 2.3 million U.S. gallons (8,700 cubic meters) of molasses, weighing approximately 13,000 short tons (12,000 metric tons), burst, and the resultant wave of molasses rushed through the streets at an estimated 35 miles per hour (56 kilometers per hour), killing 21 people and injuring 150. The event entered local folklore and residents claimed for decades afterwards that the area still smelled of molasses on hot summer days. Flood Molasses can be fermented to produce ethanol, the active ingredient in alcoholic beverages and a key component in munitions.: 11  The disaster occurred at the Purity Distilling Company facility at 529 Commercial Street near Keany Square. A considerable amount of molasses had been stored there by the company, which used the harborside Commercial...
