Boosting and favouriting are 100% fine! It's really nice to see if someone appreciates your post and/or wants to share it.
AFAIK the people claiming favouriting was "useless" were those who were more used to algorithm-driven sites, and were disappointed to find out the Fediverse didn't have algos.

I also remember the lectures people gave newcomers that "favourites are useless" — apparently that became a meme to do because Twitter had changed others' likes to be visible/notifiable events a couple years earlier, and everyone apparently forgot that for like 10 years Twitter did not operate like that. Likes were likes (announced to the poster), and retweets were retweets (announced to your followers). As they should be.
There was absolutely no point in discouraging people from favouriting things. It's excellent feedback for the poster!

I'm confused by people who get annoyed about boosts. That's how discoverability works here, no? I love seeing boosted posts because that's how I find new and interesting stuff on my tl. I boost stuff I think is cool so other people see it, and hopefully they think it's cool too. If I've got it wrong, please let me know. I like masto and I want to use good etiquette
