I've been using Inkscape for over 10 years. If I had been using Illustrator for 10 years I would have paid Adobe over $2,500 in "rental" fees for a subscription that stops as soon as I stop paying.

Instead I started paying $5 a month to Inkscape to help make sure we can all use it for free for as long as we want.

@tux0r Thank you for saying "In my (very personal) opinion" because you do bring up valid points, and they should not be brushed away.

I am happy for it when I use it in specific ways... and I've had a lot of time to learn the quirks and how to live with them.

Do you have suggestions for other alternatives besides Inkscape, Adobe Illustrator, or the Affinity Suite?

@rasterweb In my (very personal) opinion, Inkscape
      - is complicated to use,
      - has an incoherent UI,
      - is quite slow and
      - lacks professional features.

"Inkscape, because it's not Adobe" is a false dichotomy here. If you're happy with it, that's fine, but there are alternatives. :)

@tux0r Please tell us why Inkscape sucks.

@rasterweb Sadly, Inkscape sucks. I warmly recommend Affinity Designer (or Suite, if you need v2 features).

@tux0r That's exactly it. All software sucks, but I prefer the ways free and open software sucks to the ways closed-up software sucks. It's a habit and using the free kind for most of your life will get you into that habit.

@rasterweb “$software sucks” is a matter of taste most of the time, but I didn’t want this to look like mere trolling anyway. :-)

I know, would I have used Inkscape (or GIMP… same reasoning) for a decade, I would probably consider it “good enough”. But I have been using Affinity products for a few years, and I’m quite happy with them, even though I don’t use them “professionally” (only some hobbyist stuff).

For vector graphics, Corel DRAW is quite good too. But expensive.

I am semi-retired now, but I produce a 40 page local community magazine and support a couple of websites for a charity and my daughter's business.
      Main Tools:
      Scribus, GIMP, Libreoffice, Bluefish.
I also run on Linux, and have done for years.
