    The "ability to disable replies" feature request on the Mastodon issue list is 5 (FIVE) years old: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/8565

    I just learned from @jdp23 that Bluesky, which has only existed for basically 53 seconds, will be getting this feature before us: https://techcrunch.com/2023/12/01/bluesky-rolls-out-automated-moderation-tools-plus-user-and-moderation-lists/

    On the Mastodon Public Roadmap this feature isn't even in the "Planned" section: https://joinmastodon.org/roadmap 😐 (MAS-37 Restrict who can reply to a post)

    If you too think this very basic safety feature, one of the most thumbsed-up on the Mastodon issue list, should be a higher priority, go to the Github issue and add your 👍 and a comment to bump it into the devs' awareness: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/8565

      “Disable replies” feature · Issue #8565 · mastodon/mastodon
      Most blogging systems and some social networks like Dribbble (possibly Instagram?) have a “disable comments/replies” feature. I wonder if it could be of use in Mastodon? Adding a “Disable replies” ...

      @nileane @cassolotl @jdp23 yes, there is nothing allowing this in ActivityPub at the moment. We drafted a FEP for this but it stalled and did not reach agreement: https://socialhub.activitypub.rocks/t/fep-5624-per-object-reply-control-policies/2723
      It raises a lot of hard questions about who « owns » a reply (it’s author, or the top poster?) and we do not have a good answer at the moment. But this is still something we want to solve.

      @nileane @cassolotl @jdp23 Also Bluesky may be very young, but they have more than 10 times the budget (meaning engineering resources) than Mastodon or the Fediverse ever had).

      @crowdagger @nileane @cassolotl @jdp23 It means people can hide answers for their whole instance? Or it will be hidden only in their replies, but can be seen on all other instances? Then how do you convey this? The top poster still needs to see those hidden answers somewhere to be able to un-hide them.
      This bring a lot of questions and need for additional development, so we would prefer to draw a general plan on what to do about replies first.

      @renchap @nileane @cassolotl @jdp23 But in the meantime wouldn't it possible to at least hide replies? I mean in this case it's easier to settle: a reply hidden by the top poster won't be seen on their page, but will still be seen on the author's page? Or am i missing something that makes it more complicated?

      @cassolotl

      Unfortunately, this is a complex technical issue requiring knowledge of ActivityPub and Mastodon (I am not even sure I understand everything correctly myself).

      I guess I can say that sending us money, or getting more people send us money, or finding volunteers people expert in those areas would help, but this is very generic :)

      @renchap @crowdagger @nileane @cassolotl @jdp23 talking about hiding, I’d like to be able to hide someone’s post just for myself. Like a mute for a specific article and its replies so it stops showing up when boosted or when people reply to it when I’m quoted in it

      @crowdagger You are not the only one wanting this, it has been asked for organisation accounts for example. But it is more complex than just hiding them from the page, as I explained you still need to see them somehow to un-hide them, and we need something to explain why other people might see the replies elsewhere. This is definitely on my list :)

      @renchap @nileane @cassolotl @jdp23 I was more thinking about what can be seen on my profile page., e.g. so that if I share a public post of mine (e.g. https://corneill.es/@crowdagger/111510668005604207 ) I can be quite sure that I can ensure that I'm OK with all the content that is displayed (technically I think can remove replies there by blocking the person? but it's a bit extreme sometimes). This would be purely local and related to the user (it could even be only relevant to what's displayed on the Web frontend, not necessarily at an API level?). OTOH it might be only a niche concern of wanting to be able to fine tune a bit more what is displayed on my profile page, I understand for most people the #1 reason to want this is to avoid harassment and this kind of content and my idea does not do much in that concern.
