   Kind of off-topic but I’ve been trying to dream up ways to make the scrobbling part easier for people. It’s the real barrier to entry, here. I was thinking of writing an MRF where the instance admin feeds it a Last.fm API key, and then from there, any user on the instance can add a Last.fm username into one of the “fields” of your profile, and then finally, when that user posts something, it hits the API and checks for a song other than the most recent scrobble.

   But I uh, I’m not entirely sold on that approach.

     Don’t most have a Last.fm scrobbler at least? That’s kind of why I did the intermediary between Last.fm and fedi with fedifm.

     Apparently it has Lua and JavaScript support. I’m not a language ideologue, so I might write it in JavaScript over Lua just because more people know it and it’s therefore easier to maintain. But I know a lot of techies fang out when I use that thinking because they hate JS lol

     I’m getting kind of annoyed because I want to store the bearer token in a config file or something and it just doesn’t let you make up options. Pic related. I bet there’s some extra step you’re expected to do.

     These are poorly-written at best, and require extra steps (you should be able to just add custom options without separating them into a separate file). I see why people hate mpv now.

     Also, looking at other people’s code for scrobbling, it looks like you can’t make outbound POST connections directly from the script, needing to run an external executable to do so on your behalf. That you can’t send data outward, but you can run arbitrary programs, is absolutely retarded.
