It only gets interesting cause the animator ran out of money for the fight scenes halfway through the show and were forced to make up some religious psych bullshit to wave off the fact they had no clue what they were doing. The last two episodes had no relation to the rest of the tv series, and that's why they made 3 movies offering alternative endings.
>"Let's make an anime! Let's do a madlib... Give me a taboo topic!"
>"Religion!"
>"Okay, now give me a age group..."
>"Teenagers!"
>"Now give me a paraphilia!"
>"Ephebophilia!"
>"Now just give me 3 hair colours..."
>"Purple, orange, and blue!"
>"Okay, so this anime explores a complex narrative intertwining elements of religion, portraying intricate relationships and challenges. The series delves into psychological and emotional depths, tackling themes of existentialism and identity. The narrative unfolds against a backdrop of distinctive colors such as orange, blue, and purple, each contributing to the visual and symbolic richness of the storyline. While religion plays a significant role, the series also addresses controversial topics like ephebophilia, adding layers of complexity to its exploration of the human psyche."
>"I don't understand this!"
>"Uptight queers and their fat friends will in about 20 years and boast about it, and it'll make us a whole fucken load of money regardless"
And pseuds never will understand there's no meaning except for whatever you project. Ano was just depressed and used Shinji as a stand-in for himself while Misato, Rei, and Asuka were just the types of women he liked at the time. It started off as a mecha anime about saving the world and then started getting deeper into religious tropes as Ano got more depressed. 20 years later the show still doesn't make any sense, it's the Lain of mech animes.
