The only thing I've come across is "millennials are lazy" ... I'm not sure which birth years count as millennials, but I had never seen someone walk into the workplace already determined not to do any work until around 2000. Prior to that, everyone I'd seen started out with "I'm going to work so hard that you'll promote me to manager within the first six months".

@clacke Well, the second type is definitely exploitable ... I think almost every employer I've ever had took advantage of that to get extra (unpaid) labor or to get people to do tasks that were more dangerous than they could have been (often due to lack of safety equipment).

@lnxw48a1 Self-assured tryhards are also difficult to work with and hog credit.

I prefer to collaborate with people who have the team's/department's/company's long-term goals in mind and want to make the operation run better.

@lnxw48a1 Also the ambitious class can be people who swoop in, take all the shortcuts, look like they're productive, then move on to greater things leaving everyone else to maintain their mess.

@clacke Wow. I said nothing about either "self-assured tryhards" or "the ambitious class". What I described is how normal everyday people approached a new job until 20-25 years ago.

It isn't a perfect description. For example, a smoker was going to get caught 2-3 times sneaking off for an unauthorized smoke break before they either quit or learned to confine their smoking to their break times.

@lnxw48a1 That's how "gonna work so hard you'll promote me within the first six months" reads to me. I have never encountered well-adjusted individuals with that attitude. Not in the 90s, not at my parents' jobs in the 80s.

In my world people want to do their job well and then punch out and go home because they have lives and families.
