I think the idea of millions of servers with 100 members who pay $1 a month is a highly sustainable model of decentralized social media. It’s been really easy to manage my duties as an admin this past year and anyone who is thinking of running a server next year, I’m happy to chat. I think launching more smaller instances is the way to go and grow because the federation actually works when it works.
Q: How much does it cost per user per month to run your mastodon instance on masto.host?
A: We have a small group of around 100 consistently active members who generate significant interactions, a few with high follower counts. Next year, the budget is $1 per active user per month to run https://federate.social so presently a subset of generous members are supporting our local community and the #fediverse more broadly. #GivingTuesday
A: All donations on my ko-fi go straight to paying our masto.host subscription which will cross the threshold of $99/mo next year after originally launching with only $9/mo of capacity just over a year ago. #GivingTuesday
