Polls this far out from the election are inevitably wrong and therefore useless. So why does the media commission and publish them? Because they benefit from generalized anxiety about the election. They want us to fear, obsess, and wring our hands. Let’s not give them that satisfaction.

aethervision (aethervision@universeodon.com)'s status on Sunday, 26-Nov-2023 02:07:04 JST aethervision @georgetakei Why do most political reporters treat politics like a sporting event? Why are laws so overwritten and confusing? Same reason, really. In the case of the law, lawyers were paid by the word and in the case of reporters, rewards are delivered by the click. Every incentive they receive takes them away from actual good reporting and tempts them to make themselves part of the story. If journalists took their jobs seriously as they expect us to take them, this would be a much different world.
