Just released a new YouTube video about why we're all still trapped on Twitter even as the platform continues to circle the toilet drain. (I know, the irony of posting this here...) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-tUhFpbXLk
@adamconover I’d like to get it out there that the onboarding experience changed a fair bit this year. We don’t force people to choose a server anymore, so getting started shouldn’t be any more complicated than on any other site.
@adamconover mastodon has provided a default instance (same onboarding as bluesky) so that users don’t have to choose anything since April. Yet “normies will never know how to sign up” is repeated so often people think it’s true.
Don’t get me wrong, Mastodon has plenty to critique. But I don’t think that’s it.
@adamconover Hi Adam. Why are you opposed to the image filter for Hate symbols on Bluesky? The alternatives seem to be to just ban reporting on hate groups that contain images, or to force everyone to see them in the name of awareness. (Actually promoting hate is against community guidelines, very first prohibition, in fact.)
What you described at the end of the video isn't that much different from mastodon/fediverse. I don't know if that is what you intended on doing or not.
I think public funding of key projects is an excellent idea. I don't know your background outside of entertainment, but a LOT of what makes modern info tech function was built in the same manner as Mastodon.
@adamconover I got a theory that celebrities feel more stuck on Twitter that non-celebrities. All the other social networks on twitter have been wrecked and left for elsewhere.
As for regulation, the new owner is experimenting with following no rules, not even contracts, & it turns out our legal & contract system doesn't have the sort of teeth to get that org to do anything in the law or a contract & so far there have been no consequences.
@adamconover funny and on point, agree with most of it but disagree that your stuck, at some point all parties end and your left with one drunk on the dance floor.
Elon fired or drove out all the competent staff, the incompetent or visa reliant ones remain. He's pushing large complex features for the "everything" app. Rushed stressed programmers who hate you don't write secure stable code. Can't see how this just doesn't keep getting worse and worse.
@adamconover lots of European government agencies have been joining mastodon (I think, correct me if I’m wrong) on their own self-hosted instances. Maybe we need a mastodon.gov for trusted US gov agencies!
@adamconover I saw your video right after signing up to mastodon 😅 giggled a bit because I found it easy, but I know others might find it... difficult to shift platforms.
@adamconover Nice! But instead of telling people how hard it is to pick an instance, why don’t you tell them how easy it is to pick the „default“ instance? Because it literally is. Scaring potential users makes them stick to Twitter. 😉 So that’s my extend of criticism, because you are right: we need something like Twitter, but not in the hands of deluded rich guys. And, frankly, it’s hard to take something away from anyone (for good reason), so Elmo will probably keep Twitter forever. 🤷♂️
@adamconover Havw u considered the solution of forcing all social media companies to join the fediverse. It would mean u can switch platforms and not lose the valuable users that make these companies so valuable.
