Only the grail in Chretien de Troyes' Perceval is real. all that other fanfiction about Galahad becoming supersaiyan and finding it is NOT canon. there was only one chance to ever retrieve it, and Perceval fucked it up.

I completely understand where the Holy Grail quest myths come from now, after reading de Troyes' Perceval. The original tale was unfinished and we never got to see the good ending. All we know is that Perceval got one shot to take it without knowing, and missed the opportunity and never found his way back to the castle. The fact it just ends without completion is so compelling/infuriating. No wonder so many other authors came along to try and pick up the pieces.

Tell me: seated there,
Did you see the spear that bled
Without the presence of flesh
Or veins?" "Did I see it?
Oh yes, by God, I did!"
"And did you ask why
It was bleeding?" "I said not a word."
"In the name of God, believe me,
You made a mistake. That was wrong.
Did you see the grail, too?"
"Quite clearly." "By whom was it carried?"
''A girl." "Where did she come from?"
"From a room." "And where did she go?"
"Into some other room."
"Did anyone walk in front of her?"
"Yes." "Who?" "Two servants,
That's all." "And what were they holding?"
"Well-lit candleholders."
''And who came after the grail?"
"A girl." "And what was she holding?"
"A small silver platter."
"Did you ask any of these people
Where they were going with these things?"
"Not a word escaped my lips."
"Oh Lord, that's even worse!
My friend: tell me your name."
And then, not knowing his name,
He somehow knew, and said
He was Perceval from Wales,
Not knowing if he spoke the truth,
But he did, though he did not know it.
And hearing this the girl
Rose and faced him, and spoke
As if in anger, "You've just
Changed your name, my friend."
"Really?" "You're Perceval
The Unhappy, the Miserable, the Unfortunate!
Ah, how unlucky you are,
For had you asked those questions
You could have completely cured
The good king of all his wounds:
He would have become entirely
Whole, and ruled as he should.
How much good you'd have done!
Believe me, miseries will come,
Instead, for you and for others
it was at this exact moment that Perceval knew he had fucked up in a major way.

You see, Galahad, I knew you would come for my grail, that's why I had a fake grail made and placed within this very castle.

@hakui when he wakes up the castle is completely empty and then once he leaves a mysterious person pulls up the drawbridge so he can't get back in again, it's so sad. and then when he realizes his mistake it's too late. and then the story ends before it gets corrected. Perceval just persists in the doomed world he has created
