So, there is a group of people on Mastodon that I have a lot of trouble relating to and understanding, that I somewhat lovingly call "The Misanthropes". They do a few things that boggle my mind a bit. The first is constantly announcing how they don't like humanity, and don't really want to be around people, which is okay, I guess, I can understand that, except you're doing it on SOCIAL media. If you just want to read articles, and look at pictures there are tons of better sources than social media, so why are you here? If you really hate all of humanity so much, you have the option in this one area to avoid it completely, why don't you?

Another thing is no matter what question I ask or how innocuous it is, someone will question the validity of why I'm asking it or the entire foundation of the question. So, why?! If you read a question and it doesn't apply to you or it doesn't interest you, don't interact with it, these aren't compulsory. Or I will ask What someone's favorite color is, and someone will say purple, they will tell that person that purple is traditionally the color of royalty, and ask them Why they are supporting the Monarchy, or if someone says yellow, they will let them know that yellow is hideous, and they shouldn't like it. Most of my questions are opinion or experience based, so the answer doesn't really matter, I am just trying to learn what people are like. What do you get out of making other people feel bad about themselves over basically unimportant things? Does it make you feel better about yourself or superior in some way? I really want to understand. Overall, most people are interesting and pleasant and just want to connect, what do you want?

That's the thing. You DON'T have to. There's no one who's gonna stop you from being a loser your whole life.

I used to say it in my twenties and now almost into my 40s I'm even more confident about it: lots of people, maybe even MOST people, never hit that phase of self awareness that those of us who do recognize as "growing up". How many retired men are actually just old, gray, worn down, scared little boys afraid of being seen as weak by their peers?

@Itty53 @no1lion99 That Makes a lot of sense, and it's something we are all a little guilty of when we are younger. We want to be different and haven't really formed much a self yet, so it's easier to indentify with the things you don't like, than finding things you do, but at some point you have to grow up, and find commonalities with people.

I'm a nutshell yeah. Imagine if you will: you're a loser. No one talks to you. You have no friends. You've spent the last decade in school telling people you're better than them and then suddenly you're not in school and realize you're not better than the rest of the world.

What's a loser to do? Human brains NEED interaction, they go fucking nuts without it. Social media is where they go. Zero consequences for being a loser here.

@RickiTarr @Itty53 @no1lion99 IDK about younger people today, but I was a teenager through the 90s, and back then, aggressive cynicism was basically part of looking smart. A lot of that was in reaction to the cultural values of the 80s, but it was full of wrongness in its own way. Took me a while to wise up.

@RickiTarr I have a going hypothesis that cruelty is addictive. It offers an easy cycle of high, crash, remorse, compensation, and seeking a new high.

@RickiTarr @Itty53 @no1lion99 Hard same. But I think I also needed that time to rage against the lies and fake smiles of Reaganite culture first.

@Itty53 @RickiTarr @no1lion99 I get along with Zoomer mentality just fine. They're right to be angry and if they want to burn some bridges, I'll help 'em start the fire.

God, Amen to that. Totally went through that. Cynicism is the root of defeatism and therefore, the most common cause of self fulfilling prophecy. We taught entire generations that all politicians, all of them, were liars by default. We taught that. Is it any wonder then why people believe it today?

Unfortunately the next generation's answer to that was irony and irony had its own problems.

Fortunately though, zoomers aren't about irony.

      They're angry.

@franktaber @Itty53 @RickiTarr @no1lion99 There are some, yes, but it also means it's our job to be out there, in communities, being a counterweight to it as best we can.

@Itty53 @roadriverrail @RickiTarr @no1lion99 I worry there are too many out there vying for that anger to channel it into the right wing rabbit hole that feeds the anger with false explanations and false solutions.
