@lamp The only hardware acceleration that the Intel G41 Express Chipset has is the GMA_X4500 graphics chip that handles video, which has no acceleration circuitry specifically for H.264 video.

Only the faster GMA X4500HD can handle 1080p H.264 video at low to mid bitrates, the base GMA X4500 is only fast enough to play 720p@30fps; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GMA_X4500?useskin=monobook#GMA_X4500

If you want to minimize overhead, I would recommend installing a free version of GNU/Linux-libre and then playing videos in mpv, which will give you the fastest playback you can get.

  The Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) is a series of integrated graphics processors introduced in 2004 by Intel, replacing the earlier Intel Extreme Graphics series and being succeeded by the Intel HD and Iris Graphics series.   @eisai software is up to date, the pc is from 2009, so i'm wondering if it even has any sort of hardware acceleration at all...

  @eisai chrome:gpu says video decode and encode are unavailable, i guess it's all software.
  
  The gpu is "Intel G41 Express Chipset" if that means anything

  either because it's 720p30 (which you can't select on youtube) and/or because it doesn't have the overhead of the youtube player

  @lamp It may be because the browser (or OS driver) relies on hardware decoding. Switching to software may or may not help, if the CPU is weak.
