   "young people can't buy homes because they'd rather buy big fancy TVs"

   I am begging older generations to understand that televisions have gone from "a thing that costs 4 months' salary" to "a thing you get for free when your roommate moves and can't be bothered to take it"

     And meanwhile homes have gone from "a thing one breadwinner can afford for the whole family" to "a thing the whole family spends most of their lifetime trying to pay off and then something goes wrong or you have healthcare bills and the bank takes it all away"

     @VeryBadLlama There's also this frustrating "anchoring point" where poverty is forever defined as Depression Dust Bowl and if you aren't wearing a burlap sack, you can't possibly be poor. To be "really poor" you have to be shot solely in sepia tone.

     Social norms have advanced: we no longer consider electricity, running water, and access to information (television, mobile phone, whatever) as luxury goods.

     @strangetikigod @VeryBadLlama the world has become very good at cheaply mass producing often useless things that feed consumer fads, while even better at extracting wealth for actual necessities.
