Is anyone still on #facebook I'm kind of thinking about signing out of that one next. All I do is post positive teaching things so I can look back on them. No one I know in real life hardly interacts with my posts. It just feels like a bunch of people watching what I do, but never interacting.

Sean Bala (seanbala@mas.to)'s status on Thursday, 23-Nov-2023 02:22:11 JST Sean Bala I recently got back on to post about the death of my younger brother. I had not been on in about four years actively. I found myself confused and kind of overwhelmed. I was really struck by how busy it looked. And how every third post was an ad.

Sean Bala (seanbala@mas.to)'s status on Thursday, 23-Nov-2023 02:22:32 JST Sean Bala I posted about my brother and got LOTS of interactions. I made another post and I got very few reactions. I think one of the craziest things about algorithmic social media is that it feels a bit like a slot machine - you genuinely don't know what you are going to get and so you keep checking. I don't feel the same breathlessness here.

Sean Bala (seanbala@mas.to)'s status on Thursday, 23-Nov-2023 02:25:33 JST Sean Bala I want to get off it and disengage from Meta stuff generally but it is impossible. My Indian family all use WhatsApp and my mom uses Messenger primarily to communicate with me. And so many people from my life pre-2019 are on there still. I don't use it but it is one connection to my past. Probably what Meta and Facebook wanted to happen!
I only know 2-3 people on Mastodon personally (and one is my spouse, LOL) . A bit sad but I hope that it changes as more people come.
