   Been reading up a lot about neoliberals lately.

   Turns out that the people who love capitalism the most and want to protect it at all costs don't think that it inevitably leads to democracy. In fact they think too much democracy leads inevitably to socialism, and sought (often successfully) to encase capitalism within the protection of national and international law in order to fend off democratic attacks on "economic freedom," aka, the right of a small slice of humanity to take their piles of money wherever they want and be assured of finding desperate low-wage workers wherever they go.

     @SallyStrange Defending capitalism at this stage in the game is so embarrassing. Like, if you ARE a capitalist, just enjoy your ill-gotten gains protected by men with guns. No need to talk about it on the internet. If you're NOT a rich person then why the fuck are you wasting your time defending them?

     It's sad but also hilarious that this seems to have been taken as a cue by some to attempt a defense of capitalism to me.

     Capitalism is shit, kids. But, if you want to argue about that, I'm very happy to do so. It's like arguing with creationists. Far less complicated than arguing with other leftists about how to move humanity forward out of this monetized planet-burning disaster.

     I'm an American leftist calling on American liberals to decide whether they like capitalism or not, and if not, to abandon the label "liberal," which cannot, I think, be completely divorced from its historical and international connotations.

     @morecowbell @SallyStrange Definitions are freely available online. Read Marx even if you are opposed to communism. Markets and commerce are not the same as capitalism; there are many ways to exchange goods, services, and tokens of value that are not capitalism.

     @SallyStrange Define capitalism. Does democratic socialism include capitalism in your definition? Some things need to be collectively owned. Some things need to remain in a free market. It’s not one or the other.
