@raccoonformality@tech.lgbt I have very high doubts GameMaker will do that.

You can not be "open source" and "free for non-commercial use" at the same time. If they were planning on releasing GameMaker as free software like Godot they wouldn't do this step first.

@nytpu@tilde.zone @raccoonformality@tech.lgbt "source available" is what is most likely going to happen. Many other game engines share do this like Unreal or Source.

      Godot stays winning.

I'm not holding my breath, but it's not out of the realm of possibility that they're doing this as a first step to prove to some upper manager that making it free isn't going to immediately drain their bank accounts. Although I still think it's probably much more likely to be made source-available, or at best “open core”, if they do end up releasing it at all.

@halotroop2288@meow.social @raccoonformality@tech.lgbt Yeah, not free or open source, but just "source available", which doesn't really help against the problem of developer opression.

Maybe, but what if they go the way of Unreal and allow developers to sign up for access to the source code? Not FOSS, but visible source.

@halotroop2288@meow.social @raccoonformality@tech.lgbt A code repository isn't that useful if you aren't allowed to do anything with it.
