I was in a discussion today with @TechConnectify and @feditips about reply toxicity here, and I've tried to make all of that into a coherent post.

I want to go to #MastoDev with a version of this, but need to let it sit overnight and probably rewrite it. But I also think it's something anyone interested in non-corporate-controlled social media needs to think about, because a fair number of people go "influencers, fuck 'em" and that's... not how I think this needs to be understood. If you don't care about them, fine, but care about their followers who _will_ follow them away.

Because like it or not, if you want to go against corporate-owned social media, you need these people too.

I don't think it's a good idea to design a social network around the needs of people with exceptional numbers of followers.

If you want to mainly have one-directional traffic, there are already many broadcast media available for people who want to follow rather than interact.

The idea of social networks is supposed to be about accounts being treated equally regardless of how many followers you have, especially on the Fediverse.

@moira @TechConnectify @feditips Great post - I've been thinking about this a bunch lately, specifically, how does one recreate a "quality filter" in an algorithm-free timeline, where all toots are created equal?

My first thought is a reddit-like up/down vote system, but that feels like it would go against the 'democratic' ethos of Mastodon, so I don't know...

Speaking as a larger account, the idea of designing in favour of accounts of a large size feels very unfair and misguided. The additional reach of large scale follows is a privilege, it's not some kind of disability or burden.

There are already plenty of social networks build around the needs of "influencers", the Fediverse is supposed to be an alternative to that kind of thing.

@feditips @RufusJCooter @moira Heh. Trying to get anybody to agree on what the fediverse is "supposed to be" is definitionally impossible.

Why do you think there are so many forks/clients/instances/etc.?

If you don't want us here just fucking say it.

"If you don't want us here just fucking say it."

I'm not sure who you mean by "us"?

I think it's great you're on here! Happy to see YouTubers on here, and it's great if you can make a living from it! I'd be sad to see you go.

If you're not happy here, that's sad, and what you say about this place is your prerogative.

It would be equally sad though if someone with a dozen followers was unhappy here.

"Why is adding the ability to curate your notifications a _bad_ thing for _low_ follower count users? "

      Automatic algorithms aren't curation.

Curation means a human looking at stuff and choosing what they want.

"Why is having control over _what you get notified about_ ... somehow elitist?"

You can already choose what you get notified about. I did a post about it yesterday.

You're talking about giving away control to an algorithm.

@feditips @RufusJCooter @TechConnectify And I understand that, I really do, but none of this is unique to the needs of large accounts.

Not everyone has - or should be required to have - the kind of armour-clad skin some of us have developed. Why is adding the ability to curate your notifications a _bad_ thing for _low_ follower count users? Do those users never get negged? Do they never have a toot go a bit popular? Do they never get sealioned? Of course they do.

Why is having control over _what you get notified about_ ... somehow elitist?

I think this is maybe where this conversation started to go sideways - best as I can figure, nobody's asking for that, at least not that I can see in this thread

I'm certainly not asking for that!

A lot of people have tried the fediverse, found they didn't like the experience and left; many more have been here for a while, but contemplate leaving

I think it's worth asking why?
