One uncharitable thought I have about all the academics who've bounced from here to Bsky is that they actually do *prefer* some of the "drama" and a vibe that to me was always a bit sick-making, both on Twitter and now there. I guess I'm pretty happy not being in a community with that even if I miss some people (& am doubtless missing some news/info)

(There are real issues with power & safety here; I am not masking or denying them ofc)

I'm pretty sure I'm doing Bsky wrong because I find it sparse and can't figure out how to gain some momentum on information, etc.

I was one of the academics who used Twitter a lot for public engagement and to counter mis/disinformation regarding education and COVID. I found it immensely useful to reach a larger and diverse audience and to connect with journalists and other academics. I don't think we will see that again - and I think that part of it is sad.

@inquiline @Zeb_Larson whatever it is, the divide between academics who loved some earlier version of Twitter and want to recreate it and those who were never particularly drawn to Twitter and want something different is, I think, real.

It’s a shame many have left or are leaving, but maybe it will be easier to build something new without people trying to recreate the past. There are still many more academics who never use social media than were ever on Twitter. Let’s build with them in mind too

@Zeb_Larson I was only there for a few weeks before most of the academics had landed, I think (more were scientists, i think?). I actually did not use/did not like Twitter before it became truly indispensable in the early pandemic, and the academic drama was not a selling point in its favor prior to that.

@inquiline I absolutely think they do, not uncharitable at all. There are things I enjoy about being there and we’ve yet to get to “main character of the day” among academics but it feels like they’re spoiling for that.

(I also think a lot of them don’t want adjuncts/grad students, but more because they don’t want *those* types of arguments; they want it to be a cross between a seminar and a listserv).
