@babe I mean, I'm sure it will be reverse-engineered at some point, the question is: at what cost. obviously it won't be something that can be done by an amateur, the original process is 9 steps if you omit washes, and requires multiple re-exposures at specific light wavelengths to only re-expose one of the layers, with a lot of developpers that are toxic and need specific temperatures etc. obviously not credible to do at home. so even if someone reverse-engineers it... how much will they want

Developing has been already, by more than one person if I remember right. The person who thought they might actually try to make a business out of it suggested (and this is a few years ago) a cost of about $100 a roll. Everyone rolled around laughing.As for recreating the film itself, literally impossible as a practical matter: not just the plant, but it's literally impossible to buy some of the chemicals needed. They were manufactured in bulk especially for Kodak.

And pretty much all the chemical and plant engineers who worked on it are dead or very old indeed now. Their working knowledge of the processes.is gone, and what remains of the documentation, patents etc is insufficient.
