I guess if we didn't go with UI design simplification all the way to Flat Design, current interfaces would look exactly like some Microsoft Bob kind of hell where it's like a point-and-click game except the mouse pointer doesn't works reliably as an indicator. -

In fact I hate it we ought to get better than point-and-click games.
In a (good) point-and-click you know in advance what kind/family of action is going to be started thanks to the richer amount of cursors, you know if you're going to interact with the decor or change of scene, you know if you're going to trash an object or explore the trashcan, …
In the interface of a point-and-click game there's little to no surprises by design, the story is the one designed to have traps, but the gameplay shouldn't, because accidentally frustrating the player is the last thing you want.
User Interfaces really should be better. -

Meanwhile in UI-land there's no difference between: Opening a menu, opening a popup, discarding (a part of) your work, executing another application, browsing to another document, jumping to another section of the current document, … -

@lanodan Oh, you still can do that (but no dinosaur). But I don’t know about a software that would make use of more than the few basic cursors…

@lanodan Reminds me of the number of mouse-actions Win XP (or was it 98?) could distinguish, and you could set a different cursor for each of them, right from the control panel. And you could make some of those be a dinosaur :-)
Then at least two redesigns came…
