it took another 40 years until the first mechanisms came out that worked properly.
here a few examples of a better revolver from the 1880's, all of which sucked and are little more then experiments. -

single action revolvers were the standard and the winchester lever action was cutting edge technology.
even the brass cartridge was only a few decades old at that point.
it was a time of innovation where everyone was throwing shit at the wall, seeing what sticks.
tube fed and magazine fed mechanisms stuck, while the chain revolver did not.
