    im starting to think that if everyone has to vote for a tepid candidate who doesn't support any of the policies they want just to prevent the fascists from taking over every time there's an election then maybe democracy is a failed concept

      ideally democracy should work by tossing all the fascists into a live volcano and then all the remaining people can have a spirited debate about where and how to allocate tax money

      @eniko

      Just did a political survey for one of the survey sites I'm part of and one of the questions was about various forms of government and how successful I thought they'd be.
      It's kind of telling that I couldn't be more supportive of any of them more than a "kind of agree" other than dictatorship which was a hard no...

      There is basically no one you can really trust to make decisions on behalf of humanity.

      @eniko Oh, those systems have been tried. Spoilers: not the fascists who end up in the volcano

      @eniko Democracy is a failed concept, when the candidates you can vote for have been "carefully selected" among a specific class of rich people, by other rich people, and the only viable choice you have as a voter is one among many rich people that are completely removed from the reality of the country they're supposed to govern.

      It's not a real choice anymore if the possibilities have been pre-selected for you beforehand, is it?

      @eniko — not sure to what extent it will help, but ending the two-party system in US politics seems to be an important next step

      @eniko known issue. Would be relatively easy to solve with ranked choice voting, but nothing is going to propose something like it without a massive population movement

      @eniko Ranked choice voting is supposed to help with that.

      But in the US at least, any kind of reform that would break the two party system is going to be difficult, since those two parties are the ones that hold power to change it.

      @eniko Well, all the other stuff is a vastly more failed concept tbh. Democracy has always been 'advertised' as "the worst system of governemnt, aside from all the other ones"

      The hard truth is people are fucking awful, you're definitely never going to find a 0 choice system without abuse. Or any system without abuse. The best system is the one that can be corrected most easily and quickly.

      @eniko I’ve heard it said that voting is like catching a bus, you can’t always rely on a single bus getting you to your destination, but you can usually find one that gets you closer.

      Having said that, while voting might slow down the fascists, it’s not the only thing needed. When the choices are shit and shit-lite, and rw politicians erode the democratic system itself… you need something outside the system to fix it (volcanoes).

      @bnut we left the US because we felt we had the choice between two bus lines. One was a high speed bus going where we absolutely didn't wanna be. The other was a low speed bus that was also going the same direction
